Resumption of In-Person Scouting Activities

As of June 17th, units in the Connecticut Rivers Council can meet in person per the updated state guidelines. Maximum of 25 people indoors and up to 100 people outdoors. Social distancing and masks are still required when guidelines apply. The chairman of the Council Risk Management Committee has come up with the following guidelines:

  • Remember all aspects of youth protection.
  • There must be no overnight camping.
  • Activity size must be no larger than the outdoor group size allowed by the state (currently 25 indoors and 100 outdoors), counting all adults and youth.
  • No participants can show evidence of any aspect of illness, nor have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 within the last two weeks. Taking temperatures is recommended (no participation over 100 °F).
  • Participants can only be transported by their parent or guardian. The purpose of this is to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
  • Social distancing no less than 6' must be observed at all times, including meals and breaks.
  • There can be no shared food or drink.
  • Units must be prepared to disinfect bathrooms between uses.
  • Masks must be worn at all times, except while eating.
  • Any adult or youth becoming ill during the trip needs to be treated as a medical emergency.

Information on opportunities for the use of camp properties will be announced shortly.

Shawtown Work Days Resume

As the State of Connecticut reopens, Citizens of Shawtown work days at Camp Workcoeman will now resume while following Council, state, and CDC guidance. The next work day is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th from 9 AM until 3 PM. In order to ensure everyone’s safety, please bring your own LUNCH and MASK. To ensure proper group numbers and for contact tracing purposes, you MUST confirm your attendance to Brian Cornell ([email protected]) by June 25th.

Do NOT come to camp if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms that cannot be attributed to another known health condition: new shortness of breath, cough, sore throat, fever over 100 °F or sense of having a fever, sweating, chills, any loss of taste or smell, unexplained muscle aches, nausea, or diarrhea.

Do NOT come to camp if you have been in close contact (within six feet for more than 15 minutes) with someone known to have COVID-19 (outside of a patient care setting while using appropriate PPE), have been told by a public health official or employer that you may have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or have anyone in your household showing COVID-19 symptoms.

Do NOT come to camp if you have returned within the past 14 days from domestic travel to a region that is under stay-at-home orders, or from a destination outside the United States.

Together we can do our part to help Camp Workcoeman while keeping everyone safe.

COVID-19 Update — All Regular Summer Activities Canceled

All Regularly Scheduled Summer Activities Canceled: On 12 May 2020, the Connecticut Rivers Council announced that all regularly scheduled summer activities at its camps have been canceled for 2020. On 18 May 2020, the State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood issued revised guidance, in concordance with Executive Order No. 7PP, stating that “[resident camps] will not be permitted to operate during the declared state of emergency unless and until permitted to do so by order of the Governor.” Due to the severe restrictions that have been placed on day camps, the Council has decided to cancel all day camps as well.

Activities Possible in Late Summer and Early Fall: Here at Camp Workcoeman we know how important a summer camp experience is for you and your Scouts. As such, we are brainstorming and beginning to plan activities for the late summer and early fall in anticipation of lessened restrictions. While we do not yet know what these activities will look like, we do know that health and safety are our top priorities and that the nature of these activities will depend highly on the guidance we receive from local, state, and federal health authorities.

Virtual Camp Experience: For those interested, the Connecticut Rivers Council is offering a new, virtual camp experience for both Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA: Camp Kinda-Like-A. Please visit the Council website for more information and to register.

Additional updates will be posted on this website as they become available. Please refer to these news articles for the most up to date information; other pages of the camp website may be out of date.

Steak Dinner Canceled

A excerpt from a letter from Brian Cornell, chairman of the Citizens of Shawtown:

The COVID-19 crisis is something that none of us have experienced before and in everything that we do moving forward, we all must do our part to end this situation. As each day has ticked by over the past weeks and months, it has become clear to me that any attempt to hold our Annual Steak and Chicken Dinner and Silent Auction on June 6th safely, will just not happen as scheduled this year. I do not make this decision lightly and have discussed this at length with Lou and Frank for their valuable input prior to making my decision. Ultimately, the safety and well-being of all is paramount and comes first!

That is not to say a similar event cannot be planned for later this Summer or Fall, but we need to continue proper due diligence at this time until the experts and many others can tell us more. As you know, the Citizens of Shawtown rely heavily on this annual fundraiser to assist us in our support of our beloved Camp Workcoeman!
