Spring Break Merit Badge Days: First Aid — April 18, 2024

Scouts BSA

Eagle required merit badge that provides instruction on caring for injured and ill persons until they can receive professional medical care.

This course is being offered at the reduced rate because it is being subsidized by the Camp Workcoeman Alumni Association.

Prerequisites:
Scouts must be able to demonstrate that they have current knowledge of all requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class First Aid Requirements (#1). Scouts must also bring a personal first aid kit (#5a) and a note from their Scoutmaster that they inspected their troop’s first aid kit (#5b).

Check-in starts at 8:30 AM, with closing at 5:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.

Spring Break Merit Badge Days: Emergency Preparedness — April 19, 2024

This is an ‘Eagle required’ merit badge that helps a Scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during and after an emergency.

NRA Basic Rifle Training — April 20, 2024

Training

Required second course for anyone wishing to become an NRA Certified Rifle Instructor. This course covers basic safety and rifle shooting skills.

Covered Wagon Derby — April 26–28, 2024

Cub Scouts

This program is designed to enable Cub Scout and Webelos to learn and practice outdoor skills related to their rank requirements during a competition with other dens and packs from the surrounding area.

This event is themed after the ‘Wild West,’ where each den is encouraged to bring a wagon to carry supplies needed for each activity. In addition to the derby itself, this weekend program will include two nights of camping; breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday; a Saturday night campfire; and a ‘Special Program.’ A program guide is available below, and a commemorative patch will be presented to all Scouts in attendance.

Check-in starts at 6:00 PM Friday, with departure at 9:00 AM Sunday.

Registration closes at 11:59 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Cost: $35 per Scout, $15 per adult

Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) — May 3–5, 2024

Training

Participants learn how to build a fire, use an axe, cook outdoors, use a map and compass, responsibly care for nature, and much more.

This required course for new BSA Troop leaders builds on the Scoutmaster Specific Training introducing new leaders to outdoor skills and helping provide the confidence to take youth on outdoor adventures. This course can also be taken as part of the New Scouts BSA Troop Leader Training where both required trainings (Scoutmaster Specific and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) will be completed.

Time: Check-in at 6:00 PM on Friday, depart at 2:00 PM on Sunday

Archery Level I Instructor Training — May 5, 2024

NRA Rifle Instructor Training — May 11, 2024

This course provides advanced training to prepare participants to coordinate a shooting range. The itinerary includes an emphasis on safety, range leadership, and shooting instruction. Those with this certification can serve as a Rifle instructor for council, camp, and unit events.

Spring Centennial Camporee: Navigating the Past — May 17–19, 2024

Scouts BSA

An exciting program for Scouts BSA units that will combine navigation and heritage of the camp itself, all concluding with a Saturday evening campfire to open the 100th anniversary summer.

This will be one of the main events to mark the 100th anniversary of Camp Workcoeman! This event will feature a patrol based program, where Scouts will travel to various locations throughout the camp and participate in activities that connect to the history of Camp Workcoeman. Scouts will have the chance to put together a code related to camp history, participate in a patch auction, take part in a campfire on Saturday evening, and to learn and become part of the awesome history of the camp.

Check-in is held on Friday evening from 6:00–8:00 PM; there will be a Saturday morning check-in from 7:00-8:00 AM. Campsites will be assigned in advance and communicated to units beforehand. The event ends at 10:00 AM on Sunday.

All participants will receive a commemorative patch.

Cost: $15 per participant

Wilderness First Aid Training — June 7–9, 2024

Training

This training is designed to provide you with the skills to assess and provide treatment to an ill or injured person in a remote environment where care by a professional is not available. Here, you will learn how to assess, treat and when possible, prevent medical and traumatic emergencies within the scope of your training.

This training will consist of group discussions and skill instruction, followed by scenarios where you will put your skills to the test. This course will follow the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines. This course is required for adults serving as ‘Scoutmasters’ for the National Jamboree or on any of the BSA High Adventure Bases.

CPR certification is a prerequisite for all participants. CPR certification will be conducted on Friday evening, June 7 at 6:00 PM for those not certified.

The list of WFA training options available on this weekend will consist of:

  • Wilderness First Aid Certification: $225 (participant is already certified in CPR)
    Arrive Friday night at 5:30–6:00 PM or Saturday morning at 7:30 AM for 8:00 AM Saturday start.
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification and CPR Certification: $235
    Arrive Friday 5:30–6:00 PM.
  • Wilderness First Aid Recertification: $200
    Arrive Saturday afternoon for 4:00 PM start.
  • Wilderness First Aid Instructor Certification: $300 (includes WFA renewal if needed)
    Arrive Friday night by 5:00 PM to help setup and prepare. Certification participants will meet virtually before the course to plan for practice teaching.

  • CPR Only Certification: $45
    Takes place 6:00–10:00 PM Friday evening, June 7 only.

Except for CPR only, costs will increase $25 on May 1 (pre-May prices shown).

Participants are required to stay at camp for the duration of the course. Meals provided include breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Departure is 1:00 PM on Sunday.

Cooking Merit Badge (Session 1) — July 1–3, 2024

The Cooking merit badge introduces principles of cooking that can be used both at home or in the outdoors. Through taking this merit badge, Scouts will learn about food safety, nutritional guidelines, meal planning, and methods of food preparation and will review the variety of culinary (or cooking) careers available.

While at camp for these three days, Scouts will complete the ‘Camp Cooking’ and ‘Trail Cooking’ components of this merit badge. To earn a completion, they will need to email their menu and photos of them cooking to the camp staff. There will also be a Zoom meeting on the Tuesday evening of the week prior to this merit badge—all participants will be required to attend this Zoom meeting.

Please note the classes run each day from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Units can coordinate an overnight stay, with food and program options; a campsite must be reserved separately. Scouts may not, however, stay overnight unattended without parent or unit supervision.

Recommended for Second Class Scouts and above.

The beauty of the water, the solitude, and the skills that the sport requires have made fly-fishing very important in the lives of many notable people. Come out to camp to take part in this badge this summer.

Scouts will participate in Fly Fishing Merit Badge, which includes learning how to cast, tie flies, gut and cook a fish, and much more. Program includes lunch and equipment.

SDI Open Water SCUBA Certification and Merit Badge Program (Week 1) — July 8–11, 2024

This entry level SCUBA Certification course is designed to give participants the qualifications and skills necessary to safely conduct open water dives. Participants will learn about buoyancy, applying weights, marine conservation, equipment, and more. There will also be an online training section that participants must complete before the onsite training at camp. Details will be sent to all who register. This program includes meals from Monday lunch through Thursday lunch and overnight camping. It also includes all instruction, equipment, and certification.

Participants will be contacted by the Connecticut Scuba Academy beforehand with information on medical forms, pre-learning, and more. Participants can either come for the day or stay overnight; evening activities will be available for those staying overnight.

Advanced SCUBA Certification — August 2–4, 2024

This advanced level SCUBA course will focus on the Underwater Navigation and Night time and Limited Visibility Diving Programs. Participants will learn how to properly navigate underwater, develop skills related to natural navigation, underwater compass navigation, and techniques that utilize multiple approaches. In addition to diving during the day, participants will also dive in the evening using dive lights and interact with nocturnal aquatic life.

Registration includes meals beginning with Saturday breakfast through Sunday breakfast. Two nights of camping are included as well as instruction, equipment, and two certifications.

Participants must have an entry level open water certification to participate in this advanced course.

Participants will be contacted by the Connecticut Scuba Academy beforehand with information on medical forms, pre-learning, and more.

Baloo's Cub and Family Camp — August 2–4, 2024

This is a weekend experience for Cub Scouts, youth family members and parents to enjoy a weekend of camping together! Families will participate in a round-robin type program that includes swimming, boating, shooting sports, nature, and more.

Meals will include Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast. This is a great event for individual families or for packs to plan as a weekend activity.

Non-Scout family members are welcome to join in the fun!

Wood Badge NST11-66-24 — September 20–22 and October 19–20, 2024

Training

Wood Badge is advanced Scout leader training that began in 1919 by Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting and Wood Badge’s first director. It came to America in 1948 and has been updated to reflect current BSA policies and programs. Incorporating the best techniques available, Wood Badge has become the most advanced leadership training course in Scouting!

Wood Badge is the highest level of Scout leadership training and provides you with the tools to be a superior leader. The leadership skills taught are for leaders from all Scouting areas including Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and the district and council. The 1st half of the course utilizes a classroom environment and practical exercises to teach the essentials of leadership. You’ll learn what makes leadership work for you in Scouting and your personal life. The 2nd half offers classroom and outdoor experiences to help you learn the application of leadership skills. Finally, you will write and complete a “Ticket.” The “Ticket” consists of five written goals. These goals connect your new leadership knowledge to your role in Scouting.

Any Scouter who has attended basic training for their registered position and serves in a leadership role in Scouting or in a position that directly supports a unit can attend.

Both weekends must be attended.

About Camp

Camp Workcoeman is located in the hills of northwest Connecticut in scenic New Hartford and Barkhamsted. The camp consists of approximately 427 acres on the shore of beautiful West Hill Pond, possibly the cleanest in Connecticut.

Established in 1924, it is one of the oldest continuously operated Scout camps in the country. For 100 years, thousands of Scouts and Scouters have had unforgettable Scouting experiences at Camp Workcoeman. This fine tradition of Scouting continues today.
